Michochoro

Michochoro is Swahili for ‘alleys’. This series of works began as a reflection on the paths I take as a pedestrian when navigating Nairobi’s central business district. When running an errand or moving between terminals in the CBD, I prefer using these michochoro because they are shortcuts. They help chart the straightest path possible between points, especially when traversing across multiple major streets.

I am also drawn to the movement of light through these alleys, resulting in the recession or the emergence of architectural features of buildings. In the more recent works within the series, I investigate this play of light by working on a toned surface and painting in the highlights. Most of the alleys in Nairobi’s CBD are gloomy and dirty. I intentionally shot the photographs used in the series during the golden hour as a practice of gratitude for these Michochoro. The photographs were taken on Sunday mornings or evenings when the city centre was sparsely populated, and the low-angle sun produced a golden hue, enhancing colours and depth. I am particularly grateful for the michochoro during rush hour when the main streets are heavily congested.
